This Independent New Zealand Artist is About to “Set Fire” to Your Playlist
Recently, I’ve been absolutely obsessed with a new artist who goes by the name of Saski. She is an independent artist from New Zealand who is bringing on a new kind of electronic music. Her impulsive, rich music draws inspiration from artists such as Lapsley, Lauv, Billie Eillish and Quinn XCII.
When I first heard her single, “Faking Bright”, which has over 5 milliom streams on Spotify, I immediately thought of Lapsley’s “Station.” Saski is very playful and creative her beats. The sudden starts and stops will get you bopping your head to this one. She experiments heavily with chopped vocals, creating a dialogue between two voices: one in the upper register and one in the lower register. Her voice is so smooth and hypnotic that you’ll fall in love with it instantly. She creates variety in the beats that reminds me of a bouncy ball bouncing between two walls.
Her most recent single, “Set Fire”, features an angsty melody accompanied by piano that develops into an explosion of sound. She uses a variety of percussive sounds to add colour to her music. If you listen closely, you’ll also be able to hear a variety of vocal samples to spin her music, particularly at the chorus. Of course, her lyrics are beautifully written and have so much meaning.
Her music is authentic, funky, and a gem in the indie electronic pop world. Check out her music video for her single, “Work It Out” here:
