The Swoons Are Going to be the Next Big Thing in EDM
The Swoons is the electronic trio that everyone should be watching because they are going to big places. Consisting of three recent Berklee graduates, Matt Underwood, Tony Ann and Giacomo Timbrello, are all extremely talented musicians. Particularly, the band’s pianist, Tony Ann, was recently on tour with the Chainsmokers after his incredible piano cover of the band’s song, “Roses,” went viral.
Fans are excitedly anticipating their upcoming EP, “Lost,” which will be released in Spring 2018. So far, they have released four songs from the EP. Each one has a unique sound and combines modern EDM and dance music seamlessly. Their lyrics are meaningful, relatable and beautifully written.
Their first release, “Lost,” is a dreamy pop that features Matt’s smooth vocals and a dialogue played between the piano and guitar. The chorus highlights big, distorted chords and chopped vocals.
The second song on their EP, “Balance,” draws on elements from “Lost” but uses a more perpetual modern EDM beat. Again, in “Balance,” they explore using different sounds and elements to enhance the music. The element of chopped vocals, which is becoming widely popular in EDM, is also incorporated in the chorus.
“Plug,” the third song on the EP, is a change of tone. While still following the same themes and elements as the other songs from the EP, “Plug” is more mellow and calm. One of the most beautiful lyrics in this piece is, “Feel the ebb and flow of electricity as we collied.” In “Plug,” they further explore with chopped vocals, which are heard throughout the chorus in a range of pitches.
Their most recent release, “Novacaine” goes in a completely different direction. The intro leading up to the first verse draws on inspirations from Charlie Puth with the beat drop right before the down beat on the first chorus, creating an element of mystery and surprise. The beat they used also sounds very similar to Charlie Puth’s recent release, “How Long,” combining a funk beat with electronic elements. “Novacaine” is about letting a girl take you to another place, referring to the drug with the same name.
