The Norwegian Singer That’s Got Us Crushing
Sigrid is the rising young singer-songwriter that is transforming dance-pop and electronic music. Earlier this month, she released her debut album, Sucker Punch, and it is phenomenal.
She might be young, but she’s mighty. Her voice so flamboyant and her presence as a singer is undeniably irresistible.
The album is so refreshing and so full of character. It includes twelve songs, including her 2017 hit, “Don’t Kill My Vibe” and Gold-Certified, “Strangers.” Throughout the album, there’s a strong presence of 80s dance music that can be heard.
The first song is the title track, “Sucker Punch,” which starts off with a bouncy synth that sets the tone for the rest of the album. There are so many things I like about this song from the fun personality of the song, to the use of the robotic harmonies in the bridge. The song is bold, bright and wild. It’s like a punch in the face but in a good way. It sounds like a throwback to the 80s with its big bass drum hits and guitar slides. She really shows off her vocal range by jumping around with her voice.
The second song on the album is “Mine Right Now.” I love the creative ways she uses percussion in this song, and how she explores different energy levels throughout the song. Both “Mine Right Now” and “Sucker Punch” was co-written by Sigrid with Emily Warren, and Warren’s style definitely shines through in both works. Warren is most well-known for her collaboration with The Chainsmokers on their song, “Don’t Say”, “Side Effects” and “Don’t Let Me Down.”
One of my favourite songs on the album is “Don’t Feel Like Crying.” Starting with powerful strings and piano, it immediately reminded me of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.” She combines a very contagious dance beat with orchestral strings to create a masterpiece. On top of that, her lyrics are catchy and clever. In the first verse, she sings,
“I know I should be ordering takeout
Sitting on my couch, that’s what you do
I know I should be all in my feelings
Staring at the ceiling
But here’s the truth”
Near the end of the song, she alternates between singing and speaking to create a very intimate and contrasting section.
But my favourite song on the album has to be “Don’t Kill My Vibe.” “Don’t Kill My Vibe” is an anthem. It’s powerful, energetic and carefree. The lyrics are not only catchy but also send an extremely meaningful message.
The last song on the album is completely different from the rest of the songs. She slows it down with a lyrical piano ballad, “Dynamite.” I’d say that the song serves as a sort of farewell to all the energy and ending. It’s an extremely beautiful and intimate piece featuring only piano and her incredible vocals. You can hear the pain in her voice as she sings, “Oh, it’s so cold here, ’Cause I left my heart to be with you.”
