After their debut on the hit CTV series, “The Launch”, Canada (and the world) has fallen in love with Elijah Woods and Jamie Fine. Their single, Ain’t Easy, launched at number one on iTunes and was certified Platinum by Music Canada.

Now, after receiving the iHeartRadio MMVA’s Best New Canadian Artist award, they have released a new single, Better Off.

Better Off takes on a completely different style than their first single, Ain’t Easy, which was written by One Republic’s Ryan Tedder, Zack Skelton and Camilla Cabello.

Better Off is set in an eerie, nightclub atmosphere, which is giving me serious Reputation vibes. The song was written and produced by the duo, and it’s about being better off without your ex.

Stylistically, the song really does reflect Taylor Swift’s hit, Look What You Made Me Do. It starts off with eerie chords in the synth and echoes of voices in every direction.

Throughout the song, you can hear the double beat on the kick, which drives the tension. During the pre-chorus, you can hear a minor chord outlined by the vocals, followed by fast lyrics. I love this contrast because it is a clever use of the rhythm and the words.

The song is also extremely bass heavy to balance out the high vocals in the chorus. The vocals, of course, are incredible. There are lines when it sounds like he’s on the borderline of singing and screaming, which gives the impression of feeling trapped but knowing that he’s “better off alone.”
