Oh Wonder at the Danforth Music Hall on September 20th

When we got off the subway, you could see the line of people before you could see the Music Hall. The lobby was packed with people as we squeezed our way into the hall. We stood near the front of the stage and waited for about an hour before Jaymes Young came out to play. His voice was soothing and although I had never heard any of his songs before, he attracted the attention of the crowd that anxiously waited for Oh Wonder to play.

The roar from the crowd was insane as they stepped out onto the stage and began playing “High On Humans”. This was their third night playing in Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall, and all three concerts had sold out. I looked behind us and the hall was packed with people screaming and singing along. They sounded exactly like they did in the recording that at first, I thought they were lip syncing. But as they continued to play, you could feel their energy building with the crowd.

They played a favourite of mine, “Without You” and several songs from their new album including “Overgrowth,” “Heart Strings,” and “Solo.” They also played some of their older songs such as “White Blood,” “Body Gold,” and “Livewire.” At one point, a girl in the crowd stood on another guy’s shoulders. We sang and howled until our voices hurt. They alternated between slow songs and fast songs, hyping up the crowd. The light show behind them was another spectacle altogether. It shimmered an array of colours and blacked out at the perfect moments in sync with the music.

In my opinion, Josephine and Anthony make the perfect duo. Not only do they make amazing music, but their voices collide so harmoniously that it creates a warm and soothing atmosphere. Their songs combine synths and electric guitar, usually backed with a simple beat, and is just absolutely magical when played live.

Overall, I had a lot of fun and this was definitely a concert worth going to. It’s obvious why they sold out three nights in a row.
