New Singles: “Why Don’t We Try Again” by House of Faces
At a first listen, “Why Don’t We Try Again” by House of Faces sounds like an Elton John ballad. It begins with a riff played by piano and strings before the Coldplay-like vocals come in singing, “We were so perfect, you and I.” However, the song lacks depth and any captivating elements.
Personally, I find that the intro is way too long. Sometimes, long intros work but not in this case. Although the instrumental introduction is actually quite beautifully written, it takes almost 40 seconds before the vocals come in. I almost thought that the song didn’t have vocals at all.
The beat itself is also too generic. There is so much potential for the drum kit in this song, and it is not utilized. The song itself lacks the punch that listeners search for.
I loved the smooth, electrifying vocals in this song. The melody line was classic, especially at the arrival of the chorus. However, the lyrics themselves weren’t special. It sounded like a repeat of every other love song ever written, which quickly became boring.
Another thing that bothered me while listening was the balance between the vocals and the instrumentals. It seemed like they were constantly fighting and a lot of the times, the instrumentals were winning.
However, I actually liked the chord progression and instrumentals throughout the song. They were sentimental and fits the style of the song very well.
