Meet Finneas, the Genius Behind This Teen Star
So you’ve probably heard of Billie Eillish, the 17-year old prodigy who has been high on the music industry radar this year. But what you probably didn’t know is that she has an older brother named Finneas, who co-writes and produces all of her music.
Billie’s first single, “Ocean Eyes” was released when she was 13-years old and it was the first song that the sibling duo wrote and produced together.
But Finneas isn’t just standing in his little sister’s shadow; he releases his own music as well. Basically, he sounds like the male version of Billie Eillish (not surprising).
Finneas, like Billie, has such a unique sound that has captured the ears of many listeners. He focuses on a newer genre called, “alternative trap” which is essentially a combination of alternative pop and EDM.
His music is highly electronic and he makes great use of synths and the classic electric keyboard sound. In his song, “Hollywood Forever”, he opens with beautiful rolled chords on electric keyboard, which sound like bells. He also combines various percussive sounds and explores the use of everyday objects. (In Billie Eillish’s song “watch”, which he produced, he used matches in place of a snare and a “blowing” sound for the hi-hat!)
The thing that draws me in most about Finneas’s music is the mood. Most of his songs are mellow ballads about depression and heartbreak, something that many young people can relate to. Some of my favourites are “Break My Heart Again” and “College.”
It’s also worth mentioning that he has amazing vocals. His voice is clear and easy to listen to. He employs great use of layered vocals to create thick harmonies in his songs such as “Heaven”.
Finneas was also an actor in the independent film, Life Inside Out, and Glee.
