Lizz Kim Kim & The New Wave of Asian-American Artists
DJ, opera singer and indie-pop artist, Lizz Kim Kim, is among a new wave of Asian-American artists taking the spotlight. She recently released her new single, “Freefall” on all streaming platforms.
“Freefall” is Lizz Kim Kim’s second single, following “Think About You,” and you can already hear her very distinctive style. I love how “Freefall” starts with fun, light synths and snaps. I also love the way she used pan control to manipulate the sound effects in the background.
However, for me, the component that is lacking is the vocals. Her voice is very ordinary and not captivating enough. At times, it seems like she is simply just stating the lyrics, and not feeling them. I would have also like a bit more in the choruses as the energy of the music and the vocals did not match. The lyrics themselves were also very plain and didn’t make me feel connected to the song.
She has a very creative use of vocal harmonies and background vocals, which could be utilized further. The direction of the song, in general, could have been more diverse, as it felt quite repetitive at the end. But overall, it is a very catchy song.
